About WETCA
Windsor-Essex has long been a welcoming home to people from diverse cultures and backgrounds. Over the years, the Tamil community in the region has grown steadily, with more families choosing Windsor-Essex as a place to live, work, raise their families, and build lasting connections.
Recognizing the growing Tamil community and a shared desire to preserve and celebrate Tamil heritage, a group of Tamil families came together to establish the Windsor Essex Tamil Cultural Association (WETCA) on April 14, 2023, an occasion made especially meaningful by its coincidence with Tamil New Year.
WETCA was established as a registered Tamil cultural non-profit organization serving the Windsor-Essex region, with a formal organizational and leadership structure. What began as a community of approximately 100 members quickly grew to more than 300 members within its first five months—reflecting the enthusiasm, participation, and support of Tamil families throughout the region.
Our Purpose
At the heart of WETCA is a commitment to preserving, promoting, and passing on Tamil language, culture, traditions, and heritage to future generations while contributing to the rich multicultural fabric of Windsor-Essex.
WETCA brings the community together through cultural celebrations, educational initiatives, family activities, youth programs, and opportunities for community service. Celebrations such as Pongal, Tamil New Year, and Deepavali provide opportunities for families to celebrate their heritage while sharing Tamil culture with the broader Windsor-Essex community.
Beyond traditional celebrations, WETCA has created memorable community experiences through initiatives such as Summer Camps, family picnics, and the Yellow Bus Tour, etc.,
Community service has also been an important part of WETCA’s journey. Through the dedication of volunteers, WETCA has organized Annadhanam (community food service) at the Hindu Mandir Windsor and other initiatives that embody the Tamil values of generosity, service, and togetherness.
Promoting Tamil Language and Literature
Preserving the Tamil language is central to WETCA’s mission. One of the association’s important early initiatives was working toward establishing a Tamil book collection at the Windsor Public Library’s Budimir Branch, helping make Tamil literature and reading materials more accessible to families, children, and future generations.

The strength of WETCA comes from its people. Volunteers have been the driving force behind the association’s events, programs, and community initiatives.
WETCA is particularly committed to encouraging youth participation and leadership. Students from institutions including the University of Windsor and St. Clair College have actively participated as volunteers, gaining opportunities to contribute to their community, develop leadership skills, and build meaningful connections.
From a modest beginning, WETCA continues to grow as a community built on culture, language, friendship, volunteerism, and service.
As WETCA moves forward, its vision remains rooted in the values that inspired its creation: to celebrate Tamil heritage, strengthen community connections, inspire future generations, and proudly contribute to the multicultural story of Windsor-Essex.
